Car Accident in Front of School in China
Videos that have been circulating on Chinese social media in recent days reveal a tragic car accident that occurred in the garden of a school. It is reported that many schoolchildren were injured in this accident. Chinese state media stated that ‘many’ children were injured in the incident, but the number of casualties has not yet been clarified.
The accident took place in front of Yongan Primary School in Dingcheng District of Changde province. No statement has yet been made as to whether the incident was a deliberate attack or a simple accident. Local media reported that several adults were also injured in the accident and thatthe car driver was neutralised by parents and security guards. Authorities reported that the 39-year-old driver was detained.
Increasing incidents of violence
Recently, there has been a marked increase in mass attacks in China. In recent months, many people have lost their lives in such attacks. In the accident that occurred on Tuesday, although it has not yet been confirmed whether it was an attack or not, it is reported that many primary school students and adults were injured. This raises security concerns in China.
Tuesday’s incident is unfortunately not the first. There are many reports of pedestrians being targeted by drivers or knife attacks in public areas across the country. While armed attacks are rare in China due to strict restrictions on gun ownership, knife attacks and vehicular assaults are on the rise.
Police reports indicate that attackers often take out their anger and frustration on innocent people because of personal problems. For example, eight people were killed in a knife attack at a vocational college in Shanghai on 16 November. There are also reports that on 11 November, a driver drove into a sports complex, killing 35 people.
