Measures against over-tourism in Florence
The historic Italian city of Florence has begun to take various measures to deal with the problem of over-tourism, which has increased in recent years. The constant increase in the number of visitors has negatively affected the quality of life of the local population, leading to reactions. The city authorities have introduced some new regulations to remedy this situation.
The 10-point plan presented by Florence’s Mayor Sarah Funaro, which aims to reduce excessive tourism, has been approved by the authorities. The main goal of this plan is to make the life of both visitors and locals more sustainable.
- Encrypted Key Boxes: The first article of the plan includes a ban on encrypted key boxesused by homeowners who rent out their homes for short periods of time. These boxes are located at the doorways to allow guests to easily enter the houses. Local residents have recently protested by wearing red tape to express their discontent with these boxes.
- Restrictions on Atypical Vehicles: There will also be restrictions on ‘atypical vehicles’ such as golf carts used by tourist guides. These mini vehicles are used to take tourists around more easily, especially in areas where vehicle traffic is restricted. With the new regulations, the use of such vehicles will be subject to certain restrictions.
- Amplifier and Speaker Bans: The decree also bans amplifiers and loudspeaker systems that can be used by guides. This aims to reduce noise pollution in the city and provide a more peaceful atmosphere.
Noting that more than 7.8 million people visited Florence in the first nine months of 2024, the local council aims to make the region a ‘living and unique city’ for both tourists and residents. These new regulations aim to preserve Florence’s historical and cultural richness.
