Effects on the Career of Oscar-winning Actress Susan Sarandon
Susan Sarandon, in addition to being an Oscar-winning actress, has attracted attention with her recent statements. Last year, she stated that her career was seriously damaged by comments she made about the Jewish people during pro-Palestinian demonstrations. Sarandon stated that she was fired by her agency and admitted that this situation led to the cancellation of all her projects.
In an interview with The Times newspaper, the famous actress said, “I was used as an example of what not to do if you want to keep working,” emphasising that she was ‘blacklisted’ in Hollywood. Sarandon said she was fired by her agency in November 2023 after making anti-Semitic remarks at a rally in Manhattan, USA.
She also apologised a few weeks later, calling her choice of words a ‘terrible mistake’. In a post on social media, he expressed the difficulties faced by Jewish Americans who are the targets of increasing antisemitic hatred, saying that he had “experienced what it is like to be in the shoes of US Muslims who are often subjected to violence”. She stated that this statement was a “terrible mistake”.
Sarandon said, “My statement implies that Jews were, until recently, strangers to persecution, when in fact it is the opposite. As we all know, from centuries of oppression and genocide in Europe to the Tree of Life attack in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Jews have long been familiar with discrimination and violence that continues to this day.” He expressed great regret for minimising this reality and hurting people with his comments.
In her interview, Sarandon stated that she was not sure whether she would be able to work in a big-production Hollywood film, and that she was currently working on a low-budget comedy film. She said that she ‘does not believe that anything will be offered in Hollywood’. Despite all these negativities, Sarandon continues to speak at rallies protesting the war between Israel and Hamas.
