G20 Summit and Brazil’s Role

Macron said: “The declaration was signed by President Lula. This was not in line with the position we could have taken,” Macron commented, emphasising the tensions this created in international relations.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz described the disagreements among G20 participants over the text as “a hallmark of the times in a changing world“, noting how complex global dynamics have become. It was emphasised that such conflicts could affect the purpose and outcome of the summit.
It was noted thatBrazilhad adopted the declaration in a hurry to produce a final document by the end of the event. “Despite European demands for tougher language on Russia’s role in the war, Brazil hurriedly issued the declaration on Monday night to avoid the risk that the summit would end without a final declaration,” Brazilian diplomats explained. This highlighted Brazil’s role and responsibilities in international diplomacy.
Earlier, the Financial Times reported that some European countries had wanted the final statement of the G20 summit to use stronger language on the conflict in Ukraine, but later changed their minds for fear of disrupting the adoption of a common document. This shift shows how fragile international co-operation and partnerships can be.
The G20 Leaders’ Summit was held in Rio de Janeiro on 18-19 November. On the instructions of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov led the Russian delegation at this important event. The Summit continued to be an important platform for discussing global issues.
