Execution of Jamshid Sharmehd in Iran
According to Iranian state television, Jamshid Sharmehd, who was on trial for organising terrorist acts, was sentenced to death by the court in February 2023. After the Court of Cassation upheld this decision, Sharmehd’s death sentence was executed. In a statement released by the Tehran Prosecutor General’s Office, it was emphasised that Sharmehd was the leader of a US-based terrorist organisation known as Tonder. “Western and American spy organisations and the child murderer have planned many terrorist operations against Iran on the orders of their bosses in the Zionist regime,” the statement said.
Tonder and Jamshid Sharmehd
The Iranian Intelligence Ministry announced the arrest of Jamshid Sharmehd in July 2020, whom it described as the leader of the US-based anti-government organisation known as Tonder and the Assembly of the Kingdom of Iran. This organisation was accused of organising various armed actions and sabotage across the country, including the attack in the city of Shiraz on 12 April 2008, which killed 14 people and injured 215 people.
“People like Sharmehd are making a mistake by trusting the United States and the Zionist regime, because these two will support them as long as their interests are served, ” Mahmoud Alawi, then Minister of Intelligence, said in a statement after the arrest of Sharmehd, who was engaged in anti-Iranian activities in the US state of California.
After his capture, Sharmehd was brought before the cameras blindfolded and his confessions that he was the planner of the attack in Shiraz were broadcast on state television. The news that Iranian intelligence attempted to kill Sharmehd, who was allegedly the instigator of the attack in Shiraz, in Los Angeles in 2009 was reflected in the US media.
Jamshid Sharmehd was sentenced to death by the court on 21 February 2023. Germany called for the reversal of Sharmehd’s death sentence and declared two employees of the Iranian Embassy in Berlin persona non grata on 22 February.
