Lukashenko criticises America and Europe

Statements of Belarusian President Lukashenko

During a visit to Belarus, President Alexander Lukashenko criticised the American influence on German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. Lukashenko made striking remarks about Scholz’s political situation:

“I don’t want to describe them accurately because this is not a very favourable situation. But it is a fact that the Americans are nowadays trampling Scholz underfoot. I don’t want to say this, but it’s common knowledge that Scholz is a ‘political lightweight’ and so on. But it must not be forgotten that he is also a son of the people. What the Germans deserve, whoever they have elected, they have to work with them. I don’t think there is a people at this point. Everyone is trying to overestimate themselves, but there is no leader to take decisions and take action.”

On the EU’s Independence from the USA

To the question of whether the European Union could be independent from the United States, Lukashenko replied: “Maybe when there were ‘Trumps’ in the EU, but at the moment there are none.”

Europe’s Leadership Problem

In his speech, Lukashenko expressed his belief that real leaders like Charles de Gaulle would emerge in Europe, “Jacques Chirac was a real leader working for the people. Now there are no such men, everyone is trembling with fear.”

Lukashenko evaluated the current situation in Europe and added the following sentences:

  • “What is there to tremble about? Cheap resources in Russia, technology in Germany… Currently, the automobile and aviation industries are disintegrating. Instead of acting together, Europe has ended up in this situation.”
  • “That’s why we must make decisions and act accordingly. Europe is ripe for this.”
  • “Europe needs real leaders who will decide and act.”

Reflections on Peace and Stability

Lukashenko concluded his speech with the following words: “Why should we, Belarusians and Russians, fight with them? We have closed the book on the Second World War, the Great Patriotic War. Millions of people died. We should have moved forward, but Europe ran after the Americans. And they think they will sit there. But they won’t. That’s why the picture is very complicated and serious, but everything is moving towards it. We just need a little patience and time.”
