Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29)
Czech President Petr Fiala, who is in Baku for the 29th session of the conference, held a telephone conversation with former US President Donald Trump on Monday evening. Fiala shared the details of this conversation with journalists yesterday.
Answering the question whether Trump told him something about the plan to end the conflict in Ukraine, Fiala said that it was not possible to disclose the content of his conversation with the US president-elect. However, he emphasised that everyone understands that the resolution of the conflict in Ukraine will not be easy.
Fiala said that he was quite surprised by his meeting with Trump. “The meeting impressed me in two ways. Firstly, there was a really open and frank discussion. Donald Trump asked my views on the Ukraine-Russia conflict and its resolution. The second was the sincerity and friendliness of our conversation, ” Fiala said. Fiala added that Trump spoke very favourably about his attitude towards the Czech Republic.
Donald Trump visited the single country of Czechoslovakia in his youth. His first wife and mother of his three children, Ivana Trump, who died in 2022, also comes from this country. This further deepens Trump’s ties with the Czech Republic.
In April, Fiala visited the White House at the invitation of current US President Joe Biden. He described the meeting as a testament to the extraordinary level of Czech-American relations.
On the other hand, Trump has previously stated that the conflict in Ukraine can be resolved through negotiations, promising several times to resolve the conflict in one day. However, Russia has emphasised that the situation is not so easy that it can be resolved simply.
