Donald Trump Nominates Matt Gaetz for Attorney General

Donald Trump’s nominee for Attorney General: Matt Gaetz

New US President Donald Trump has nominated Republican Party member Matt Gaetz as US Attorney General. This decision raised criticism that Gaetz was inadequate for this important task.

On his social media platform on Wednesday, Trump described Gaetz as an “extremely talented and tenacious” individual. At the same time, he expressed his belief that Gaetz would eliminate systematic corruption in the Justice Department.

However, the appointment drew the ire of many critics. Ty Cobb, Donald Trump’s former White House lawyer, said Gaetz was “unqualified academically, professionally, ethically, morally and experientially”. Former Justice Department Counterintelligence Division Chief David Laufman commented on Gaetz’s nomination: “This is really a sickening moment for Justice Department employees and people in the United States who care about the rule of law.”

Laufman stated that if Gaetz is confirmed, “he will turn the Justice Department into a zoo for the new president and demoralise the morale within the ministry”.

Who is Matt Gaetz?

Matt Gaetz earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in interdisciplinary sciences from Florida State University and a Juris Doctor degree from William & Mary Law School. Born in 1982, Gaetz is serving his fourth term in the U.S. House of Representatives, representing Florida’s 1st District.

Gaetz, who served on the Armed Services and Justice Committees, brought corruption in the Justice Department and the FBI to the agenda during his tenure. However, the Justice Department launched an investigation last year into allegations that Gaetz violated sex trafficking laws during a trip to the Bahamas. Gaetz has denied all charges against him.

In addition, the House Ethics Committee was conducting an ethics investigation into Gaetz for serious allegations of ‘sexual harassment, illegal drug use and misuse of campaign funds’. However, House of Representatives Speaker Mike Johnson stated on Wednesday that Gaetz resigned from the House of Representatives, where the committee was only investigating its members, causing the ‘ethics investigation’ to be effectively terminated.
